MPs Ideological Positions | 2019-2024 Parliament
Research Note | Code | Data
Together with Chris Hanretty, I have been working on estimating the left-right positions of MPs over the 2019-2024 Parliament. We do so by first asking councillors to make some pairwise comparisons between two local MPs. We ask them to pick the more left-wing MP on economic issues, after which we analyse the data using an ordinal regression model with a cumulative logit link and symmetric thresholds. This allows us to estimate the left-right positions of MPs on a common scale. The data are available for download from the link above, and can be used for further analysis.
We are currently collecting data from councillors to place MPs in the new 2024-2029 Parliament on two dimensions: left-right and liberal-authoritarian. This is done thanks to a small grant from the UK in a Changing Europe think tank. The data will be available soon.
